UC San Diego Strategic Plan for Internationalization

Welcome to a Bold Era of Strategic Internationalization

Global Initiatives is proud to release A Bold Era of Strategic Internationalization: A Strategic Plan for UC San Diego.

This plan for strategic internationalization, the first of its kind for UC San Diego, started with a charge by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation during the 2023-24 Academic Year. After nearly two years of campus-wide stakeholder engagement and feedback, Global Initiatives has collated and consolidated this expansive work into a living document with innovative and actionable strategies and recommendations.

The Plan provides a deeper understanding of how the team's recommended approaches compliment and enhance UC San Diego's unique attributes. This plan, made for the UC San Diego community by the UC San Diego community, is intended to extend the university's vast achievements and increase campus's mindshare globally in the near and distant futures.

The Plan's Foundational Elements

To maximize each pillar's potential, the Plan identifies two foundational elements that are critical to the success and sustainability of each pillar.

The Triton Center

In 2026, Global Initiatives will relocate to campus's latest capital works project, the Triton Center. The department's location in the Triton Center is both strategic and symbolic; the Triton Center serves as a gateway to the university, and Global Initiatives serves as a gateway through which campus is connected to a vast international ecosystem of education, research and service.

The ACE Lab

From 2019-2021, UC San Diego participated in The American Council on Education's Internationalization Lab. This process provided the framework for the strategic plan for comprehensive internationalization.
