Faculty Directors play a central role at Study Abroad UC San Diego, which includes UC Education Abroad Programs (UCEAP), Opportunities Abroad Programs (OAP), and UC San Diego faculty-led Global Seminars.
Faculty Directors support Study Abroad staff in administrative and academic matters, engage in special projects and campus outreach, and assist students in achieving their goals of studying abroad.
John Haviland, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, is a linguistic anthropologist with a special interest in the social life of language: conversation, gossip, and interaction. His principal research is with speakers of Mayan languages from Chiapas, Mexico, and Australian languages from southeastern Cape York Penninsula. He has studied, taught, and lived not only in Mexico and Australia, but in Sweden, Suriname, France, Germany, Guatemala, Holland, Finland, and Italy.
Ivano Caponigro is an associate professor in the linguistics department. He received his B.A. in philosophy in Italy (after studying in Cambridge, UK for a semester) and his Ph.D. in linguistics from UCLA. He was a visiting professor at the University of Maryland at College Park and then a researcher at the University of Milan - Bicocca. In Milan, he was a member of team in charge of ERASMUS, the European student exchange program. He has been at UC San Diego since 2006.
